ONLINE LEAKS: A new website aims to mimic WikiLeaks for the Forest City

By KATE DUBINSKI, The London Free Press

Got a secret you'd like to share with London?

A gripe, maybe, or a document you think we should all see?

There's a new place for wannabe Deep Throats and crusaders to leak information to the masses -- londonleaks.ca, a website its founder hopes will function as a kind of 2011-style receptacle for the plain-brown envelopes of old, stuffed with information, that were often leaked to journalists.

The site is the brainchild of Lincoln McCardle, who was inspired by the attention WikiLeaks has received with its mass distribution of sensitive material -- everything from intercepted U.S. diplomatic cables, to video of questionable behaviour by soldiers in Iraq.

"I just started thinking about it one night . . . and I thought I could create a site for London," said McCardle. "I'm leaving it open to what people want to send. As long as it's about London, that's all I care about."

The domain has been active for about two weeks, but hasn't received any leaks yet, he said.

"Either people are apathetic or there's nothing juicy going on in London," he said. "This is really for people who think they have a news piece that wasn't in the local news. And if someone has a picture of a city employee drinking a beer while driving a snow plow, I'll take that, too."

McCardle allows anonymous submissions, but will check them first before putting them online.

"I don't want to get sued," he said. "I have to be really careful about what goes up."

What McCardle doesn't want is city gossip or sniping, he said.

"I'd like to focus on local politics and stuff like that," he said. "There are a lot of people with opinions and I'd love them to share, debate and discuss information about London on londonleaks.ca. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, that's OK."
